Beginner Cycling Essentials: What You Really Need to Get Started 🚲

If you’re new to cycling (or getting back on the bike after years away), the amount of gear out there can feel overwhelming. But the thing is, you don’t need EVERYTHING straight away. And I learnt that the hard way. Here's my simple list of beginner cycling essentials - the things that make riding safer, more comfortable, and way more enjoyable.
1. A Good Helmet 🪖
Safety first! A properly fitted helmet is non-negotiable. Look for one that’s lightweight, comfortable, and certified for road cycling. I personally wear a MIPS helmet. If you don't already know, MIPS stands for “Multi-Directional Impact Protection System,” which adds a low-friction slip layer inside the helmet. This helps reduce rotational forces on your brain in the event of an angled impact, making it a great choice for extra peace of mind.
Here is the one I wear (10% off at the moment too!), but you can also shop beginner helmets here at Leisure Lakes Bikes!
2. Bike Lights 💡
Even if you’re only riding during the day, lights help you stay visible to cars, pedestrians and even other cyclists . I have both a front and back light, which is especially important as the days are getting shorter now! A small USB-rechargeable set is perfect for city rides.
3. A Sturdy Lock 🔒
Nothing ruins a ride faster than a stolen bike. Especially in London or big cities, unfortunately. Invest in a good D-lock or chain lock - it’s worth it for peace of mind even if you're just popping into the shops.
See recommended bike locks here and the ones I use here. PS Ribble Cycles is great for cycling accessories and security such as locks!
4. Comfortable Saddle & Padded Shorts 🚴♀️
If you’re planning longer rides, comfort matters! There's nothing worse than a numb bum. A padded saddle or a pair of padded shorts can make a huge difference. Shop women’s padded cycling shorts I wear here and thank me later. They also have a bunch of different options here!
5. Water Bottle & Cage 💧
Hydration is key - especially on longer routes. A bottle cage on your frame makes it easy to sip on the go. FYI, a suction, leak-proof one is a game-changer and saves time having to unscrew a lid at traffic lights (if you know the pain, you know). Find beginner-friendly water bottles here.
6. A Basic Repair Kit 🛠
It doesn’t have to be fancy - just a spare inner tube, tyre levers, and a mini pump. It’ll save you from being stranded. Treat yourself to a starter repair kit here.

See you out there,
